Alexis Bledel, who plays a starring role as Emily Malek / Ofglen on The Handmaid’s Tale, is announcing that she’s leaving the series after four seasons. The leave is unexpected as she was involved in the storyline at the end of season 4. We are still expecting season 5.
“After much thought, I felt I had to step away from ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ at this time. I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.”
Alexis was nominated for several Emmys and won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series in 2017 for her role as Emily / Ofglen on The Handmaid’s Tale. Additional recognition for Alexis’ role as Emily includes a Gold Derby Award and an OFTA Television Award. She’s also won two TV Choice Awards, a Family Television Award, an OFTA Television Award, and a Young Artist Award for her work on Gilmore Girls.
The entire cast of The Handmaid’s Tale has been nominated for a slew of awards. This is in part from the unique and gritty storyline, and of course due to the tremendous acting.
While it is unfortunate that Alexis is departing the show, we can still look forward to season 5. We have no idea what the release date will be yet, though. The show’s creator, Bruce Miller, told The Hollywood Reporter back in December 2020 that there would be a season 5. This was prior to the season 4 release.
“We’re very grateful to Hulu and MGM that the show will be returning for a fifth season, and especially to our loyal fans for their support… We are thrilled to be able to continue to tell these stories, with our incredible cast and crew, and can’t wait to be back on the air with season four next year,” Miller said.
So, we know that there will still be a season 5. And we probably won’t have our Ofglen unless someone else replaces Alexis’ character. In the meantime, you can follow The Handmaid’s Tale official Instagram here.
