Carrie Underwood Has A Real Life ‘Ghost Story’ That Involves A Scottish Castle

Carrie Underwood had teased the drop of Ghost Story as her moody counterpart to Before He Cheats, and while it certainly has the vibes of lost love, and of course revenge, it has a tone more akin to a taunt — she is living her best life while the jilted ex is alone and drinking her away.

While the song certainly feels very personal it was actually written by Hillary Lindsey, Josh Kear, and David Garcia. It also does not have anything to do with ghosts. Though Underwood did say that she has been on a hunt or two in her life. Most recently trying to spot a specter on a birthday trip to Scotland.

“This was a few years ago, I had a birthday, and we were in Scotland and I was like, okay, if I’m going to spend my birthday in Scotland, I want to stay at a haunted castle. And they found one for me in Inverlochy,” Underwood told Kelleigh Bannen on Today’s Country Radio. “And we like drove a bit out of our way to stay there, but it was so cool because the entire castle was like the perfect size for like me and my band and my crew. Like, we all got to stay there. We all had this giant night dinner at like this long table. And they bought me like a ghost hunting kit. And then we had dinner and like a scotch tasting and stuff. And then we went ghost hunting and I had like a Geiger counter. And I was like, trying to find… I didn’t find any.

“It zipped at me like a couple times, but we didn’t see any ghosts. And I was like taking pictures, thinking I’m going to like look back at these pictures. I’m going to see ghosts,” Underwood added. “Yeah. But it was fun running around in the dark, looking for ghosts on my birthday.”

The video shows Underwood as a literal ghost. It is featuring the assumed ex-lover who sees Underwood’s face and hears her voice everywhere he goes — although she’s not actually there.

It was a concept brought to life by Randee St. Nicholas but from the depths of her creativity.

“I had a vision for how I wanted to bring this song to life in performance and Randee always takes things to a whole other artistic level beyond my own imagination,” she said.

The song comes off of the singer’s upcoming album, Denim & Rhinestones, which will be out June 10.
