Elon Musk’s mom just revealed that she sleeps in the garage when she visits her son. But it’s not because he’s stowing her away or anything—Elon apparently lives modestly. In a conversation with UK’s The Sunday Times, Maye Musk explained why she sleeps in such odd quarters.

“You can’t have a fancy house near a rocket site,” explained the 74-year-old mother.
Elon’s current home is a rental from SpaceX.
It’s a hard concept for people to grasp. After all, why would the richest person in the world not have the fanciest of everything? Elon has multiple airplanes and enough money to buy any house he wants. But instead, he’s trying to live frugally.
“I am selling almost all physical possessions,” Elon announced on Twitter a couple of years ago. “Will own no house.”

Elon’s ex, Grimes, once told Vanity Fair that he lives “below the poverty line” sometimes. At one point, the mattress they shared had a hole on her side and he allegedly didn’t want to get a new one.
“Bro does not live like a billionaire,” the musician said. “Bro lives at times below the poverty line. To the point where I was like, can we not live in a very insecure $40,000 house? Where the neighbors, like, film us, and there’s no security, and I’m eating peanut butter for eight days in a row?”
Indeed, many have joked about Elon’s “homelessness,” including Rare. But it’s true, he chooses to live the vagabond lifestyle — albeit the billionaire version. That means he gets to hop on board his $70 Million dollar jet and fly wherever he chooses, whenever he chooses.
Elon’s mom, however, doesn’t seem as keen as her son on flying to the moon and back (figuratively speaking). We can’t say for her airplane mileage, but she expressed to The Sunday Times that she has no interest in flying to Mars.
“You have to have six months of preparation and isolation and that just doesn’t appeal to me,” she said. “But if my kids want me to do it, I will do it.”
