Ethan Hawke is one of those parents that every kid probably wishes they had. In an interview with the LA Times, the iconic actor spoke about his relationship with daughter, Maya Hawke. And he said that he’s not afraid to ask her for advice—something that many parents will never do.

Maya was born in 1998 to Ethan Hawke and her mother and Indie star, Uma Thurman. Her brother, Levon, was born four years later.
Maya has since built a respectable acting career (on top of being a singer and model). She attended the prestigious Juilliard Music School until dropping out to play Jo in Little Women. Now, she’s widely considered to be Stranger Things’ breakout star.
LA Times interviewer Mark Olsen brought up how Ethan adores Maya, saying, “The moments in the movie where you are talking to your daughter, Maya, the two of you have such a sweet dynamic. It’s great to see you asking her for advice.” He was referring to the documentary series The Last Movie Stars.
Ethan Hawke responded, “Well, she’s really smart. She’s been through a lot in her life. And as the Newman-Woodward kids will tell you, it’s not easy growing up with parents with paparazzi following them around. It’s not exactly the ride that some people might think it is.”
When asked about his daughter’s role in her recent risqué music video depicting an orgy, Ethan responded that he thought it was all “in the line of good trouble. You don’t want to spend your whole life staying out of trouble. Like Paul [Newman] says, ‘If you’re not pissing somebody off, you probably don’t have any character.’”
One thing is for sure. Ethan Hawke loves and respects his daughter and her autonomy and he’s not afraid to toot her horn.
