Two years after his father died, one boy got an unexpected final message.

Joseph Van Stone died two years ago. On Saturday, almost to the day of that grim anniversary, his son Rowan got a postcard postmarked June 10, 2007, USA Today reports.

“Hello from Pennsylvania. I love you, and I miss you so much,” the postcard read. “See you soon. Love, Daddy.”

Neither Rowan nor his mother have any clue how the letter got to them. Joseph would send home occasional postcards while he was in the Navy or pursuing his two master’s degrees at MIT.

“I feel like that was the final goodbye that he didn’t get to say,” his widow Julie said.

She recalled her husband’s last words: “Everything is a circle. We will see each other again. All that matters is love.”

Everything is a circle indeed.
