Just ask Matt LeBlanc, who took about six years away from acting after a spinoff from the hit sitcom Friends came to an end.

It’s true, as LeBlanc said he moved to a California ranch following a brief, unsuccessful run in Joey, and basically lived in complete seclusion.

“I barely left the house,” he said, via The International News. ‘I wanted to not have a schedule. Not be somewhere. I almost had a nervous breakdown.”

That happened in 2006, when LeBlanc also went through a divorce. Along with that, his youngest daughter was diagnosed with cortical dysplasia.

LeBlanc, now 55, said that at the time he was also entirely “burnt out” from acting. From his first Heinz Ketchup commercial in 1987 to Friends and Joey, he had been going practically nonstop for nearly 20 years.

He first pursued a career in modeling, but at 5-foot-9, he was told he was too short. So he went on to appear in commercials and a few Bon Jovi music videos, before taking the set of Friends in 1994.

When all of that came to a halt, much by his own doing, LeBlanc experienced what he called “a very dark period.”

But in 2011, Friends co-creator David Crane brought LeBlanc out from the dark. He offered LeBlanc a starring role in the underground hit Episodes. A year later, LeBlanc won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a television series, musical or comedy. He’s been working ever since.

So while losing your friends can lead to depression, it’s also your friends who can lead you out of it. Just ask LeBlanc.
