Jim and Elinor Russell have always celebrated their anniversary in a low-key fashion, though they’re sure to celebrate it. Not even his wife’s lengthy hospitalization would stop Jim from making the day special.
ABC News reports he showed up to his wife’s hospital room on their 57th anniversary wearing a tux and carrying flowers and chocolate. The two ate dinner and watched “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune.”
Elinor said the company and the celebration alleviated the monotony of the hospital, if only for a while.
“Being in a hospital bed, you get bored so when they came in, it made me smile like the younger days when we were dancing,” she said. “We’ve known each other all our lives. We just never paid attention to each other for some time.”
The pair grew up in neighboring Georgia towns. Jim went to a military college, then got drafted to fight in Germany during World War II. When he came home, he went to Georgia Tech, and reconnected with Elinor. The pair eloped on a May night in 1958 and have been together ever since. Their anniversaries usually aren’t anything special, save for a trip to Rome here and Hawaii there. It was their children who wanted to make this anniversary mean something bigger.
“My kids decided it would be great to do something special for my bride, so I went along with it,” Jim said.
