JK Rowling Tricked By Impersonators Into Thinking She Had a Zoom Call With Ukraine President

JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, was just duped by a Russian prankster group. In a 12-minute Zoom call with Vovan and Lexus, Rowling thought she was talking with Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky. The conversation becomes more and more awkward (think Borat but Russian), but Rowling doesn’t seem to catch on.

The video was discovered by the Rowling Library, a website dedicated to JK Rowling. Rowling’s spokesperson subsequently called the prank “distasteful” and issued the following statement:

“J.K. Rowling was approached to talk about her extensive charitable work in Ukraine, supporting children and families who have been affected by the current conflict in the region. The video, which has been edited, is a distorted representation of the conversation.”

Maybe JK Rowling Should Have Suspected Something?

The video was apparently audio-only on the prankster’s end, therefore they were filming Rowling and she couldn’t actually see the Zelensky impersonator.

The impersonator asks Rowling if Dumbledore is gay at one point and says that Ukraine is working on a Hogwart’s-inspired spell to take down Russian missiles. They also say that Harry Potter’s “Z” scar on his forehead, the one put there by Voldemort, resembles the Z on Russian tanks. They ask Rowling if she’ll consider changing the “Z” to a Ukrainian trident as a show of support for Ukraine.

Rowling responds, “I will look into that. It might be good for me to do something with that myself on social media because I think that will get into the newspapers.”

Awkward!

Rowling keeps laughing uncomfortably throughout the video, undeniably trying to make a good impression on “President Zelensky.”

Vovan and Lexus are infamous for prank calling all sorts of celebrities and politicians including George W. Bush, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, and Prince Harry. They’ve also been accused of being state actors, possibly acting with nefarious intent. YouTube removed their channel in March after they hoaxed UK Ministers while impersonating another Ukrainian politician.

The video has been posted by other YouTubers however. You can check it out below.
