Johnny Depp is back on the screen! But this time, it’s for a video game. Everyone’s favorite seafarer is back, and no, it’s not as Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp is playing a kooky shopkeeper named Phillip in the game Sea of Dawn. Sea of Dawn is an MMORPG game, or a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

As has been pointed out by Giant Freakin Robot, Depp’s character is strikingly similar to Captain Jack Sparrow…although perhaps a bit creepier. Depp said he helped create the character of Phillip and was involved in the game’s creative process. Depp apparently based the Phillip persona off of a dream that he had once.
Sea of Dawn’s Phillip Is Reminiscent of Jack Sparrow
Phillip is a blind shopkeeper who wears a fez. The persona is drunken and nonsensical, rambling, and hilarious—all the things that the Fear and Loathing actor is quite good at portraying.
In Sea of Dawn, players can battle other players as well as monsters, visit two hundred cities, sail the high seas, and make commercial transactions. The game can be played on mobile devices and allows for players to play people around the world.
This new role will no doubt surprise and elate Depp fans the world over, as many have thought his career ended due to his drama with ex-wife Amber Heard. And while Depp may have sworn to never play Jack Sparrow or work for Disney again, it’s now clear that he is here to stay.
Depp’s Back In Another Role, Too
The Pirates of the Caribbean superstar will also soon appear on Netflix’s movie La Favorite as King Louis XV.

Sea of Dawn is developed by Mosasaur Studio. So far, it’s available for download to mobile devices in China but a U.S. release date has not been announced.
