“Survivor” fans are mourning the sudden loss of one of the show’s top contestants

The contestant from “Survivor: Gabon” reportedly died unexpectedly on December 31. He was only 40 years old.

According to his obituary from the Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, Kay was an attorney from Brookline, N.H., and earned a bachelor’s degree from UMass-Amherst before pursuing a law degree from Syracuse University.

He is survived by his young children, Reese Elizabeth and Jackson “Jax” Russell-Reid; his girlfriend, Jennifer DePietro; mother, Jean-Ann; and sister, Andrea.

The obituary noted that Kay had the “desire to be challenged and his quest for adventure lead to his participation on the reality show, ‘Survivor.'”

“Survivor” host Jeff Probst tweeted his condolences to the family.

“I just heard the very sad news about the sudden loss of Dan Kay of Survivor: Gabon. The Survivor family sends our love to Dan’s family,” he wrote.
