Not many 17-year-olds can say they fought and beat non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and have the voice to celebrate it. Melany Huber says the cancer “taught me a whole new perspective on things. As long as it’s something I want to do I’m going to go for it.”

On that list is trying out for American Idol, where she shared her story and her passion for music.

Huber’s father shared that the chemo left her in pain, and unable to walk. “Having a positive outlook on it helped me get through it, for sure,” Huber explained.

During her performance of “Talking to the Moon” by Bruno Mars, Jennifer Lopez could not help interrupting to say “some people, when they sing they don’t have to try and emote. They just do.” This was the sentiment echoed by all of the judges expressed before all three voted her on.
