This is the last outfit Princess Diana wore in the United States

Princess Diana made her last trip to the United States in 1997, just months before she died.

The occasion was a Christies auction to sell 79 of her dresses. “The sale raised over $4 million for charity and signified a fresh start in her life as she cleared out her closet for the cause,” People magazine writes.

As part of the “Diana: Her Fashion Story” exhibit at Kensington Palace, opening February 24, many of her famous outfits will be featured, including the dress she wore for her last visit in the U.S.

The cream floral shift dress is by Catherine Walker and was worn on June 23, 1997.

“It is embellished with beautiful sequins that give it a lustrous sheen when she walked,” the exhibit’s curator Eleri Lynn tells People. “It’s quite a simple design and that was a conscious effort to focus attention on the very glamorous dresses that were being sold.”
