Walter and Leslie Kimmel aren’t exactly in the shape to party hard. But it was a moment to cherish nevertheless this week as the two Marylanders celebrated their 75th anniversary at a retirement community near Baltimore.
The Kimmels were married on Aug. 18, 1940. They are both 100 years old, the Associated Press reports.
On Tuesday, they had a party at Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, Maryland, where they live. The celebration started at the same time as their wedding that Sunday 75 years ago, The Catonsville Times reports.
The Kimmels met at a church in Baltimore when they were 22. Leslie played the organ and Walter sang in the choir there
Walter was a lifetime employee of the local electric utility and served in World War II not long after they wed. Leslie worked as a secretary. They have two sons, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
For their 50th, they had a family reunion. When staff at Charleston found out their 70th anniversary was coming up, they got to planning the party.
The celebration included classic love songs and, of course, cake. One wonders, too, how they made it this far. Lisette said mutual honesty is the best policy.
“Stay true to each other. Be honest with each other and enjoy each other,” she said.
