Two blind sisters undergo an emotional surgery that lets them see the world in a whole new way

"Sonia and Anita, two sisters living in India, have been blind since birth, but a simple eye operation makes it possible for them to see their mom for the first time. The nonprofit organization 20/20/20 provides free operations to these sisters--as well as thousands of other people in developing countries. These procedures empower people in impoverished communities to create better futures. In this short film, Blue Chalk Media shares the sisters’ poignant story and captures their initial experiences after the bandages come off. Their father admitted that even if he worked tirelessly, he and his wife would be unable to raise $300 for Sonia and Anita to undergo the 15-minute surgery to restore their eyesight.

The nonprofit organization 20/20/20 provides free operations to thousands of individuals living in developing countries. When the organization heard of the two hopeful sisters, they felt compelled to offer the girls a better future.

“If they get their eyesight, that will be a great joy,” said the father of the two sisters, before the operation.

“You need more of heart than your hand in doing service for children,” said an Indian doctor in regards to the family’s struggles to revive Sonia and Anita’s sight.

“From my heart, I am very hopeful,” said Sonia and Anita’s mother. “Tomorrow after her operation, she will finally be seeing me with her eyes wide open.”

The eldest sister sang a tune in her bedroom the night before her surgery.

The lyrics read:

“Oh dear Lord, you have given me two eyes.
Why have you kept me blind?”

When the bandages were removed from Sonia and Anita’s eyes, the girls were able to see. Blue Chalk Media captured the emotional responses from the family, as they were very grateful.
