The 18-year-old is the latest Roosevelt to move into politics. In winning his seat, Quinten is now also the youngest ANC Commissioner in all of D.C., representing the Spring Valley neighborhood in Ward 3.

According to USATV9.com he ran unopposed and will now balance the final semester of his senior year with the new position. He does not expect it to hurt his social life.

“I’m definitely still having fun. I go to parties; I have friends. I do stuff like that. But I also have a real commitment to where I live,” he told the station. “I love D.C. I’ve lived here my entire life. And I thought if I want to get involved and make a difference, this is the easiest way to do it.”

Quentin said that he hopes to stay local and attend Georgetown where he can remain active in the political realm.

What is an ANC Commissioner?

Quentin Colón Roosevelt ran unopposed in his area for a unique opportunity that has existed in DC since 1976. It is an unpaid position but gives representation to specific areas.

The website describes it as a non-partisan, neighborhood body made up of locally elected representatives that create a unique feature of the District’s Home Rule Charter.

The Commissioners, who serve two-year terms, are elected at DC Elections in November in even-numbered years (e.g. 2016). The ANCs were established to bring government closer to the people, and to bring the people closer to government.

People elected to the position may initiate recommendations for improving city services, conduct neighborhood improvement programs, and monitor resident complaints.
