Having a pet tiger seemed like a great idea, until playtime took a rough turn

“I am their mother, as far as they’re concerned, I am mommy. They rub me in the face, they’ll let me kiss them on the nose,” says Janice Haley.

Haley believes she is mommy to Saber, a 600 lb white Bengal tiger, and Janda, a 400 lb Bengal female. Both Saber and Janda have lived with Haley since they were cubs. And now that they are fully grown, she’s built an enclosure for them in her backyard.

With the help of volunteers, Haley is able to care for Saber and Janda around the clock. From meaty meals to an aggressive play time, these two tigers are in great hands.

“I don’t get scared when the tigers are dragging me around the cage,” says Carrie Ates, one of Haley’s volunteers. “They’re doing it in play and it’s a relationship that we have, especially Saber, I’ve been there with him since he was two weeks old and had gone through all the raising and the training and just kind of growing up with him.”

Saber is now 6 years old and Janda is twice his age. Haley is aware that people might question her methods in raising two big cats in captivity, but she and her volunteers believe that both have a good quality of life. She and her team hand feed them three times a day and are always sure to add an extra bit love cuddly love.

“People who consider it cruel to keep them in captivity have a point to a point,” says Haley. “It is not the ideal place for a tiger to be, in a cage. But at this point in the wild, there isn’t a lot of hope for them out there anymore. In my opinion, I wouldn’t mind being a tiger in my backyard.”
