Back in 1974, a fresh-faced Dolly Parton appeared on “The Porter Wagoner Show” to perform “Coat of Many Colors” — a song that she had recorded just three years earlier. But we can bet she never could have envisioned then what the song would mean to her career now.

This week, it was announced that the tune will inspire the upcoming NBC original movie “Coat of Many Colors,” which will tell the story of Parton’s upbringing in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Parton will serve as executive producer on the project.

“We want to create projects for NBC that are both fun and inspirational with a family audience in mind,” Parton said back in January.

Parton surprised everyone in attendance at the New York City network upfront meetings when she came out to make the announcement about the movie and the song that she has said is the favorite song she has ever written. And from the sounds of it, this is just the first of a series of movies that Parton will work with NBC on in the future.

And about that coat of many colors…is it for real?

Why yes it is and is now on display in Parton’s Chasing Rainbows Museum at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
