It would seem that George Strait knows a thing or two about love and how to make it last. He has been married to his beautiful wife, Norma, for more than 45 years and they have never been the subject of rumors, gossip or scandal. But why would they? The high school sweethearts were so in love and anxious to get married that they eloped in Mexico before they had a church wedding in a Pearsall, Texas church.

So, before crunch time, before the roses and candy are swept off the shelves, we’re looking to the King of Country Music for a little advice on how to compose the perfect, personal note in our Valentine’s Day card.

Fortunately, one doesn’t have to look too far to find a lot of inspiration for amorous messages of love and passion. His catalog of songs is riddled with them, from the undying and unrequited love of “Right or Wrong,” to the ultimate pick-up story of “The Chair,” to the passionate ache of “Run.” Whatever the occasion, whatever your stage in a relationship, George has got a song that fits.

In 1995, though, George released the timeless ode to love, “Check Yes or No,” penned by Danny Wells and Dana Hunt Black. If you haven’t heard it before, it begins with two youngsters in grade school feeling love’s fearless first blush. It reminds us that with great risk comes great reward, so make bold declarations and never be afraid to ask — “Do you love me? Check yes or no!”

If you listen closely, though, what it tells adults is to always keep a playfulness in your relationship and never forget how precious it was when it all started.

Coincidentally, George also had some monster heartbreak songs, including “Give It Away” and his collaboration with Lee Ann Womack, “The King of Broken Hearts.”

But, that’s for another day.
