It was a bad day. It was a bad day to write a great song. Doesn’t make sense, does it?

No, but what could have been a very bad day for Miranda Lambert turned out to be the day she co-wrote her ACM-nominated hit single, “Vice.”

Hit songwriter and “Vice” collaborator, Shane McAnally, didn’t even expect Miranda to show up for the writing appointment that day. News of her split with Blake Shelton had broken that day and no one would have blamed her if she instead chose to lay low and avoid the spotlight. But, Miranda fans know that their girl has a staunch fortitude and channeling her feelings into a song would be cathartic for the country music superstar.

Shane remembers the day he and fellow hit writer Josh Osborne sat down with Ran. “That was the first time we had written together,” Josh said. “I couldn’t even believe she showed up. I thought that was really brave. And it just instantly sort of made her vulnerable because she is a celebrity, because her life is on the shelves at Target.”

While many have speculated that the song is about Miranda’s divorce, Shane sets the record straight.

“It was a conversation about all of our breakups,” he said. “I will say this. With every line that we would write, I would say, ‘You’re not going to say this,’ and she would say, ‘Oh, I’ll say it.’ I’m so glad she did.”
