“How Can I Help You Say Goodbye” is one of those songs.

Recorded by the legendary Patty Loveless in 1993, the song told the story of a woman having to say goodbye throughout her life. From saying goodbye to a childhood friend moving away to saying goodbye to her husband after a divorce, the images from the song’s video captures the many farewells that we all go through during our lives.

Yet, it’s the video that still to this day hits us right in the heart, when the lead character is forced to say goodbye to her mama – the one woman who gave her all the advice she needed about goodbyes.

And if that doesn’t hit you emotionally, y’all need to check your darn pulse.

The song went on to reach No. 3 on the country charts in the early ’90s and was then remade by pop princess Laura Branigan.

And of course, Patty remains a fixture within the country music genre, collaborating with everyone from Vince Gill to Miranda Lambert in 2016.
