Florida Georgia Line put a lot of thought into their CMA Awards performance of “Confession,” but they didn’t plan on following a moment that will go down as one of the all-time best performances in the CMA Awards’ history.

Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake undoubtedly owned the night singing “Tennessee Whiskey” and Timberlake’s “Drink You Away.” Following that act would be daunting for any artist, and Florida Georgia Line knew they had their work cut out for them.

The duo tweeted just before going onstage, “Now we have to follow that. Yikes!!! #Timberlake #Stapleton

Though the duo’s performance may not make it to the all-time CMA Awards highlight reel, Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard thinks they held their own after the Stapleton and Timberlake performance.

“We gave it all we had,” Hubbard said backstage after the show. “I think it was a cool follow up. I think we both took everybody to church, so it was a good time.”

The guys are big fans of Stapleton and Timberlake and have seen both of them perform live.

Hubbard adds, “They’re two of the best. Vocally as songwriters and artists. We look up to them a lot.

You should know, “Confession” is included on Florida Georgia Line’s sophomore album, Anything Goes. The guys say it’s a great bridge to the sound and feel of their upcoming third album, due out in 2016.
