Over the course of the last century, the Grand Ole Opry has always featured a mix of songs dealing with the sin and struggles of life in country music, as well as the hope found in gospel music.

Going back to the early ’50s, Hank Williams sang about that darkness and light in his songs “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and “I Saw the Light.” That tradition continues today with artists, including Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill, singing both country and inspirational songs on the Opry.

There’s no better example of this tradition than this electrifying new Opry performance from Crowder. The band, fronted by David Crowder, delivers a southern-fried anthem called “Run Devil Run” about the power of the Holy Spirit to defeat the darker forces at work in our lives. According to David, it’s a song that’s tailor-made for the Opry stage.

“The Grand Ole Opry is a sacred thing,” David tells Rare Country. “The sounds and words still echo. To join into that great chorus is thrilling and humbling. What I love most about so much of the music that has been part of the history of the Opry is that the struggle between light and dark was so visible. It is the exact thing that inspired the song ‘Run Devil Run.’ The struggle is real. Thank God for the Light.”

“Run Devil Run” is included on Crowder’s latest album, “American Prodigal,” available now.
