Bill Gates isn’t the first to suggest that the world’s population is a burden, but the Microsoft co-founder is certainly among the most influential to say it.

Gates indicated as much when he indicated in a video that overpopulation has become an issue, and seemingly is in favor of people just disappearing from the planet — i.e., die off — and never be replaced.

“The good news is, the faster we improve health, the faster family size goes down,” Gates said in the video.

Bill Gates Knows The Solution to Overpopulation

A bizarre take, for sure.

Why do Gates and others who share this belief on the population concerned? Well, they seem to think that so many people are bad for the planet overall.

Tesla founder and new Twitter owner Elon Musk shot down this theory, as have many others. Some have outright mocked Gates.

“Most people in the world are operating under the false impression that we’ve got too many people. This is not true,” Musk said in an interview with WELT. “Earth could maintain a population many times the current level. The birth rate has been dropping like crazy.

He went on to say that the UN’s population estimates need to be updated because they’re no longer accurate and “just don’t make any sense.”

“I promise you, the problem on this planet is NOT that there are too many of God’s image-bearers,” wrote Harris Rigby of Not The Bee. “And you don’t have to be a Christian to see that.”

So go ahead and keep making babies, everyone. It seems like it will all turn out OK, after all.
