Karen The Alligator Was Not Driving During High Speed Chase: Police Issue Statement

A 40-year-old man was just caught during a high-speed chase with an alligator in tow. The alligator, whose name is “Karen,” is oddly referred to like a human. This is per the Lake County, Michigan Sheriff’s Department. The cops assure the public that Karen—yes, Karen, the alligator—wasn’t behind the wheel during the chase.

The Sheriffs gave this statement on Monday, for immediate release:

“The passenger, “Karen” the Alligator, attempted to flee the scene, but was taken into custody after a short scuffle. Karen the alligator is not facing any charges at this time.”

Well, that’s good.

The statement continues:

“We believe she was an unwilling participant during the incident, nor do we believe she was ever in control of the vehicle.”

Check out a picture of Karen the alligator alongside a video of law enforcement discussing how exactly to capture her. It’s on the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page here.

The incident, logged as “Vehicle Pursuit/Alligator Passenger,” occurred on Saturday 6/11 at about 11 PM on the US-10. Law enforcement officers from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Sheriff deputies chased the speeding car, which ended up stuck between two trees.

The driver was caught in Webber Township. He crashed along the Rails-to-Trails path close to South Forman Road.

The driver’s from Oak Park and faces several charges. He also has several previous arrest warrants from other jurisdictions.

According to MLive, alligators are pretty common in Michigan. Evidently, there are a surprising number of calls to law enforcement about catching alligators. Many of those alligators are already in captivity. Usually they’re causing a nuisance in aquariums but some are in the wild.

Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary, an alligator sanctuary in Athens, Michigan, trains law enforcement in capturing alligators. The sanctuary’s mission is to keep humans and alligators safe. They take in about 20 to 30 alligators every year. The alligators range anywhere from 1 to 11 feet long.
