Watching Don Rickles roast Ronald Reagan will remind you of an era that is long gone

From 1974 to 1984, singer Dean Martin played host for over 50 celebrity roasts that saw some of the biggest names in pop culture appear to make fun of each other.

The quality of acts ranged from C-level comics to A-list entertainers like Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and even the future President of the United States.

Then Governor of California Ronald Reagan appeared on the show four times, and was the subject of his own roast in a 1973 episode of “The Dean Martin Show,” which preceded the branded program “The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast.”

Among the comics on the dais that evening was insult comic extraordinaire Don Rickles, who laid into the future president as he would anyone else.

“The governor is the greatest politician of all time; he laughs at everything. ‘My brother died!'” Rickles joked while miming Governor Reagan’s laughter.

“I’ll never forget the stories of you standing on the White House lawn, throwing rocks at Richard Nixon’s window.”
