Dr. Terry, a dermatologist, recommends three simple tests she calls “snap, pinch, and pout” to check your skin’s elasticity and collagen levels.

Snap:

Lightly pinching the skin under your eye will test the elasticity. Watch how quickly it returns to its original position when you let go.

If it happens really quickly, then your skin is healthy and highly elastic. If not, you need to focus on drinking more water to improve your skin’s hydration.

Pinch:

The pinch test tells if your skin has enough collagen. If your skin feels full and meaty when you take a big pinch of your cheek, then you’re collagen levels are in good shape. If not, she recommends a similar pinching exercise to stimulate production.

Pout:

To test the area around your mouth more specifically, make a pout with your lips and hold it for three seconds. When you release, look for fine lines above the upper lip, which indicate dehydration.

She recommends repeating these tests for four to six weeks after changing your skincare routine to make sure you are getting the results you want.
