Never order these 7 sandwiches at Jimmy John’s

We love swinging by Jimmy John’s for a weekday lunch. The sandwiches are so delicious and are made in what feels like seconds.

But, as with any other chain restaurant, not every choice on the Jimmy John’s menu is a good one. While we recommend the occasional indulgence, you’re probably better off avoiding these seven sandwiches.

1. The J.J. Gargantuan

By the numbers:

  • 1,134 calories
  • 55.3 grams of fat
  • 179 milligrams of cholesterol
  • 3,534 milligrams of sodium
  • 83.1 grams of carbohydrates

Um, duh? The word “gargantuan” is in the name. And all the ingredients in this monstrosity — including salami, ham, capicola, roast beef, turkey, cheese, mayonnaise, and Italian dressing — could comfortably feed two people.

Look at all that sodium! Adults are supposed to eat 2,300 milligrams a day, so this sandwich is off the charts! Eating too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, hypertension, fluid retention, kidney disease, and stroke.

2. Club Tuna

By the numbers:

  • 1,000 calories
  • 56 grams of fat
  • 120 milligrams of cholesterol
  • 2,230 milligrams of sodium
  • 73 grams of carbohydrates

This sandwich has nearly a day’s worth of sodium, plus more calories than most people can comfortably take in for lunch — and that’s without the chips and drink!

If you’re craving tuna, skip this one and order a #3. Despite its 720 calories, Jimmy John’s Totally Tuna is still the (slightly) better choice.

3. Italian Night Club

By the numbers:

  • 934 calories
  • 54.3 grams of fat
  • 104 milligrams of cholesterol
  • 2,414 milligrams of sodium
  • 72.1 grams of carbohydrates

It’s stuffed with all the meats, which, needless to say, makes it extremely unhealthy. Salami, capicola, ham, and provolone cheese push up the calories, fat, and sodium in the Italian Night Club.

The smaller version is #5, the Vito. It doesn’t come with ham, but it does have a more palatable 644 calories, 31.8 grams of fat, and 1,544 milligrams of sodium.

4. Gourmet Veggie Club

By the numbers:

  • 970 calories
  • 60 grams of fat
  • 110 milligrams of cholesterol
  • 1,760 milligrams of sodium
  • 72 grams of carbohydrates

Wait — a vegetarian sandwich can be an unhealthy choice? Look closer. This sucker has more calories, fat, and cholesterol than the aforementioned meat-laden Italian Night Club. It’s probably due to the double provolone, mayonnaise, and avocado spread.

Don’t forget that you can order any Jimmy John’s sandwich in Unwich form! An Unwich wraps all the ingredients in lettuce instead of layering them on bread. That’s one way to eat fewer carbs!

5. Beach Club

By the numbers:

  • 810 calories
  • 42.5 grams of fat
  • 90 milligrams of cholesterol
  • 1,830 milligrams of sodium
  • 71 grams of carbohydrates

If you’re trying to get a beach body, don’t be deceived by the name of this sub. While it’s a somewhat healthier choice than pretty much everything else listed here, it’s still jam-packed with sodium.

Why not try the #4 instead? Jimmy John’s Turkey Tom has the turkey, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise of the Beach Club, but only 510 calories and 20.5 grams of fat.

6. Hunter’s Club

By the numbers:

  • 800 calories
  • 38 grams of fat
  • 125 milligrams of cholesterol
  • 1,890 milligrams of sodium
  • 66 grams of carbohydrates

This sandwich contains a full ¼ pound of roast beef, which is probably why its cholesterol count is so high.

New research suggests that eating cholesterol-rich foods may not affect cholesterol in the blood, as once believed. (But people with heart problems and diabetes should still take it easy on cholesterol.) Still, the Hunter’s Club’s 800 calories and all that sodium should motivate you to make a healthier choice.

7. Billy Club

By the numbers:

  • 790 calories
  • 36.5 grams of fat
  • 105 milligrams of cholesterol
  • 2,235 milligrams of sodium
  • 68 grams of carbohydrates

Once again, we’re creeping dangerously close to our daily allotment of sodium, thanks to this sandwich’s roast beef, ham, provolone, and Dijon mustard.

If you want to eat just a little healthier at Jimmy John’s, stick to the 8″ Sub Sandwiches menu and determine which ingredients you can live without, like mustard and mayonnaise, then ask whoever’s making your lunch to hold them.
