Ah, spring — the time of year when it finally becomes warm enough to sit outside with a big glass of strawberry lemonade.

In honor of the approaching season, Southern Living published the recipe for a beautiful strawberry-lemonade layer cake. It features strawberry-lemonade jam between the layers and a homemade strawberry frosting, and is certain to be a hit at the first garden party of the season.

You will need:


  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 large eggs, separated
  • 3 cups cake flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Shortening

Strawberry-lemonade jam

  • 2½ cups fresh strawberries, coarsely chopped
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch

Strawberry frosting

  • 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
  • ⅔ cup sugar, divided
  • ⅔ cup fresh strawberries, chopped
  • 1 drop pink food coloring (optional)
  • 1½ cups heavy cream
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
