While James Van Der Beek may be frozen in our minds as either the titular character on Dawson’s Creek or as Johnny Moxon in Varsity Blues. The real life James Van Der Beek has grown into a full adult with adult issues.

The 45-year-old opened up about the loss, and grief, shared by he and his wife Kimberly.
He posted on Instagram: “Pic #1, we had just lost a baby 18 weeks into pregnancy and almost lost @vanderkimberly in the process.
“I had a collaboration going south, rapidly. And I’d just been booted off a reality dancing competition I’d been favored to win. (I feel like three out of those four are fairly relatable.
“And thus began the process – not necessarily of healing – but of being present. Present to the pain. Present to the beauty around us. And present to the acceptance of being in a process I did not understand.”
James and Kimberly have been married for a dozen years and are parents to six children. They share 11-year-old Olivia; 10-year-old Joshua; eight-year-old Annabel; six-year-old Emilia; four-year-old Gwendolyn, and their youngest son Jeremiah.
The couple were heartbroken in 2019 when they lost an unborn child during pregnancy. Then, a year later, tragedy stuck again as they lost another child during pregnancy. This time in June of 2020.
Jeremiah was born in October of 2021 and was a blessing for the couple.
“Two-and-a-half years later, after another late-term pregnancy loss, after that project blew up completely after we moved to a new state and got our RV… we returned to that exact spot. With a brand new baby boy,” Van Der Beek added.
Public discussion is regular for James
This is not the first time that Van Der Beek has opened a window into this aspect of his life.
During he time on DWTS he directly discussed it.
“My wife Kimberly went through every expectant parent’s worst nightmare. We lost the baby,” he said in 2019. “The little soul we had expected to welcome into our family took a shortcut to whatever lies beyond. You never know why these things happen. That’s what I’ve been telling my kids.”
