Her dad removed the screws from her apartment door, and this is why she warns everyone else to do it too

Texas Realtor Mariana Harrison is receiving praise for a recent Facebook post showing just how vulnerable some apartment dwellers can be.

“My dad gave me this advice a long time ago when I moved into my first apartment,” Harrison wrote in the viral post. “Most contractors install the (door) plates with the supplied screws which are only a half inch long and come out with one kick by a burglary. (My dad) installed 4 inch screws in their place that go through the door frame and into the framing of the house. They can kick for a long time before they get tired!”

Harrison also posted a picture with both screws; the difference is staggering.

So, it turns out that there really is some useful advice on Facebook. It’s not all videos of cute dogs, cats and babies or political rants with the inevitable opposing views in the comments. It’s also nice to read something about Facebook that doesn’t begin with “Someone somewhere was fired after he or she posted something really stupid on Facebook…” ” ‘That’s really not me, I’m not like that at all’ said the aggrieved, fired person.”

Depending on where you live, this could definitely be the difference between a break-in and no break-in. If you travel a lot or prefer not to meet up with larcenous strangers in the middle of the night, swapping out some screws can definitely buy you some peace of mind.

And, of course if you don’t have any 4 inch screws you could always use – wait for it – nine inch nails!
