This is stunning news not only to fans of the musician and/or the TV show — but anyone even vaguely familiar with either.

Advertisements that promoted Season 22 of The Voice and that ran all summer prominently featured Blake Shelton as part of the reality-TV singing show. The new season premiered just last month.

But Shelton dropped the bombshell on Twitter on Tuesday, saying he’ll leave the show after next season.

“I’ve been wrestling with this for a while and I’ve decided that it’s time for me to step away from The Voice after next season,” his lengthy statement read. “This show has changed my life in every way for the better and it will always feel like home to me. It’s been a hell of a ride over these 12 years of chair turns.”

He added: “I’ve made lifelong bonds with [Voice host] Carson [Daly] and every single one [of] my fellow coaches over the years, including my wife Gwen Stefani!”

Blake Shelton’s Possible Reasons for Leaving The Voice

Blake Shelton’s tweet didn’t specify exactly why he’s leaving the show. However, Shelton recently said he’s prioritizing his family over his career.

In an exclusive interview with ET Online, Shelton spoke about what is truly important these days after being married to the No Doubt singer for just over a year.

“Look, I love music and I love The Voice,” Shelton told ET’s Cassie DiLaura. “I love all the cool things I get to do with my job, but those things all take a backseat now to Gwen and the kids and it’s just a new phase of my life.”

Shelton and Stefani have been living and working on his Oklahoma ranch. They’ve been planting acres of flowers and living the good life. Shelton has called Stefani “magical” and their life “incredible.” He’s also talked about loving Stefani’s three sons more each day. Stefani shares three sons with her previous husband, Bush singer Gavin Rossdale.
