For a while there, all we heard about was Netflix’s new series The Midnight Club, as if it would be the next huge deal, a la Stranger Things.

Now, Netflix can’t wait to get rid of it — as The Midnight Club failed to draw an audience and is being canceled after one measly season.

Such is life in the big city, or in this case, on the major streaming services. You either deliver, or you’re placed on the scrap heap of shows that delivered big dreams, but nothing else.

So for this show and its young cast, the clock really has struck midnight.

Series creator Mike Flanagan expressed disappointment over the announcement, saying that his “biggest disappointment is that we left so many story threads open, holding them back for the hypothetical second season, which is always a gamble.”

Yes, it sure is.

Canceled Netflix Shows

“It’s a shame we won’t get to make it, but it would be a bigger shame if you guys simply had to live with the unanswered questions and the cliffhanger,” Flanagan said, via TMZ.

At least The Midnight Club broke the Guinness Record for jump scares in a single episode, with 21, as we relayed here.

The Midnight Club takes place at a hospice for young people, who gather every night to tell spooky tales by a campfire. It was adapted from a novel by Christopher Pike and was turned into a Netflix show by Flanagan.

For what it’s worth, Flanagan is no stranger to developing horror series. He previously help complete artistic control over critically acclaimed projects such as The Haunting of Hill HouseThe Haunting of Bly Manor and 2021’s Midnight Mass.

Along with The Midnight Club, Netflix is canceling Warrior Nun after two seasons, Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself after one season, and Partner Track after one season that ended on a major cliffhanger.
