CNN’s Don Lemon to Return Wednesday After Formal Training Following Sexist Comments

CNN anchor Don Lemon is set to return on Wednesday after receiving training and apologizing for sexist comments about Nikki Haley and women’s age. CNN CEO Chris Licht announced the decision in an email, stating that he had a “frank and meaningful conversation” with Lemon and that he had agreed to participate in formal training and “continue to learn.” Lemon hasn’t appeared on CNN since his comments on February 16, and apologized on Twitter.

“The reference I made to a woman’s “prime” this morning was inartful and irrelevant, as colleagues and loved ones have pointed out, and I regret it. A woman’s age doesn’t define her either personally or professionally. I have countless women in my life who prove that every day,” he tweeted.”

Don Lemon Apologizes

He allegedly also apologized to his colleagues during an editorial meeting on Friday, saying, “When I make a mistake, I own it. And I own this one as well,” Lemon said. “I believe that women of any age… can do whatever they set their minds to.”

Lemon also reportedly bragged about his relationships with women at the network during his apology, stating, “The people I am closest to in this organization are women. The people I seek counsel from most in this organization are women.”

The offending comments occurred during a discussion on CNN This Morning about a potentially ageist remark from Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley, Don Lemon made comments that have been several are considering sexist. Haley had launched her 2024 presidential bid by suggesting mental competency tests for politicians who were older than 75.

Instead of critiquing the comment, Lemon argued that Haley, who is 51, “isn’t in her prime,” saying, “when a woman is considered to be in her prime in her 20s and 30s and maybe 40s.” His co-anchors, Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins, pushed back, with Harlow asking if Lemon meant the “prime” age for having children. Lemon replied, “Don’t shoot the messenger. I’m just saying what the facts are.”

Haley went on to respond to the comments on Twitter, saying, “Liberals can’t stand the idea of having competency tests for older politicians to make sure they can do the job. BTW it’s always the liberals who are the most sexist.” She also sent out a fundraising email around the clip.
