‘Cocaine Bear’ Exceeds Expectations with Projected $21 Million Opening Weekend

It’s official, Elizabeth Banks’ wild horror-comedy, Cocaine Bear, has surpassed its initial box office projections by a wide margin. Originally anticipated to bring in between $15 million to $17 million in its opening weekend, the film is now expected to earn much more than that. According to Variety, the movie brought in $8.6 million on its first day, which includes $2 million from its Thursday preview night.

The film, loosely based on a true story, follows the aftermath of a drug smuggler accidentally leaving a large shipment of cocaine in the woods, where a bear consumes it and wreaks havoc. Reviews have indicated that the film is even more bizarre than its premise, and even its director acknowledges its unconventional nature.

“I’m going to be honest with you, no one knows what to make of it when I tell them about it,” Banks told Variety at the premiere.“My poor mother is the least informed,” she stated. “She’s going to go with my aunts and they’re going to lose their minds.” Also attending the premiere was Keri Russell, who stated she was planning to watch the film with her 15-year-old son.

“I’m taking my son and a pack of wild teenagers,” she stated. “I’m taking the parents, too. They’re all into it. It’s a weird world we live in.”
