Eva Mendes Reveals Why She Quit Acting

Eve Mendes, 48, seems as if she’s a little too young to retire. But that is clearly what she has done when it comes to her career as an actress.

Mendes is the wife of actor Ryan Gosling, and her last movie role came in the fantasy thriller film Lost River. That was way back in 2014.

As for television, aside from a spot as the voice of a Yoga instructor in the kids show Bluey, she hasn’t appeared in any shows. The latest was in 2013’s Clear History, an HBO movie from Larry David.

In short, Mendes left the industry nearly a decade ago and she told Variety she’s glad she did.

“I don’t really miss it,” Mendes said.

“I got tired fighting for the good roles. There just was a point where I thought, ‘I’m going to create my own opportunities and become a producer on things and create my own material,’ but it just didn’t feel worth it to me.”

Mendes was born Eva de la Caridad Méndez and is a native of Miami. While she’s called it quits, she did indicate she’s happy that other Latina actresses are getting a chance these days.

“There are more opportunities for Latina actresses now, but when I bowed out 10 years ago I wasn’t being offered things that weren’t specifically Latina,” she said. “It is exciting that things are different now, so who knows what I will do in the future. But right now, I’m keeping it in the home with my kids.”

The couple is pretty private about their love life. But, they do throw in little easter eggs during interviews and awards shows. In January 2017, Gosling received a well-earned Golden Globe for his performance in La La Land. He thanked “his lady” for all of her support.

“While I was singing and dancing and playing piano, and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer,” Gosling stated. “If she hadn’t taken all of that on, so that I could have this experience, there would surely be someone up here today, so, sweetheart, thank you.”
