Hugh Jackman knows how to get jacked. And no, he doesn’t take steroids. He does it all by eating an insane “bulking” diet and working out. Here’s what we know about how Hugh Jackman is getting in shape to play Wolverine after he thought he was going to spend the rest of his career merrily singing and dancing on Broadway.

Hugh Jackman’s Mission: Ingest Enough Chicken and Martinis to Turn Back Into Wolverine So He Can Defeat Deadpool

When CNN’s Chris Wallace asked Jackman if he juices (i.e., takes steroids), Jackman flatly responded, “No.” He continued to explain why he’s steered clear of that stuff and what he does instead.

“I had been told anecdotally what the side effects of that are and I was like, ‘I don’t love it that much.’ So no, I just do it the old school way. And I tell ya, I’ve eaten more chickens — I’m so sorry to all the vegans and to the vegetarians and to the chickens of the world. I’ve…literally, the karma’s not good for me. If the deity has anything related to chickens, I’m in trouble.”

Here is why. In one Instagram post, Hugh Jackman shared insight into just how much chicken he eats. All the meals were prepared by NYC chef Mario Spina.

“Bulking. A day in the life,” the Deadpool 3 actor wrote. “Thank you Chef Mario for helping me stay healthy and properly fed whilst … Becoming. Wolverine. Again.”

He’s Also Eating Over 8,000 Calories a Day

Attached were two photos that could have been an entire week’s worth of food. There were two containers of chicken burger with sweet potato. Two containers of top sirloin with noodles. All were labeled as providing over 1,000 calories. A large box of black bass with veggie rice and herb sauce had 2,000 calories. Another box of Patagonia chinook salmon with potatoes and hot sauce had 2,100 calories.

The next picture showed the delectable dishes. They have all the colors of the rainbow and will make any omnivore or carnivore salivate to no end. But then we remember, Jackman said “a day in the life.” That was 8,300 calories in one day’s worth of food! Talk about a real-life Wolverine, this guy’s wolfing down entire refrigerators.

PSA: Deadpool 3 Is Probably Going to Be Epic

Hugh Jackman has been embodying Wolverine since 2000. Deadpool 3 will be his first time crossing over into the Deadpool franchise but his 10th time playing Wolverine. And what do you get when you mix Wolverine and Deadpool? A lot of punches, egos, and good times. And it all starts with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Their characters have been feuding since 2009 when they first met on X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And that feud ( slash/ bromance?) has extended into nearly 15 years of back and forth trolling, banter, and fun.

“I think being on set with [Ryan] every day and those two on film in every city together every day… I think it’s fair to say they’ll be punching the s— out of each other the whole time,” Jackman told People last October. “All jokes aside, I’ll probably have more fun on this movie than any other I’ve ever done.”

Speaking with Chris Wallace, Jackman admitted that he thought he was finished playing Wolverine.

Hugh Jackman Has Been Dedicating a Full 6 Months to Getting Into Wolverine Shape

“I really thought I was done. Like, I was at peace with it,” Jackman said. “I got asked everyday… I’m like no, I’m done. Someone said to me— I think it was Deb, it was my wife. She said, ‘You know, after this, what is it you really want to do?’ And I was just driving down a day later and I thought, ‘What do I want?’ And it came to me like that. Because when I kept thinking of me and Ryan of Deadpool and Wolverine, which are classic comic book rivals, there’s also a dynamic that I’ve never really got to do before as Wolverine.”

Wallace brought up the issue of age at this point. Jackman is now 54, not the spry 32-year-old he was when his version of Wolverine first appeared on the silver screen.

“So how are you going to get in that kind of shape?” Wallace asked. Fair question. And not that 8 years matters too much, but Ryan Reynolds is 46. So, Jackman certainly has a high hill to climb if he truly wants to give his longtime rival a run for his money.

“I have learned you can’t rush it,” said Jackman. “I’ve learned that it takes time. So, we have six months from when I finish [Broadway show The Music Man] to when I start filming. And I’m not doing any other work. I’m going to be with my family and train. That’s going to be my job for six months.”

The Logan actor certainly is a man of his word. He’s been documenting his progress as he transforms himself back into the other-worldly hunky mutant that he’s known for.

“He’s only 46. I’m older. But it’s not a competition,” Jackman cheekily captioned a photo. Meanwhile, he was lifting a dumbbell the size of his arm, which was the size of his thigh, which was the size of his chest. At least from a certain angle. Needless to say, the man is ripped. And, as of this photo from February 3, he’s got a few inches on Ryan Reynold’s biceps.

Hugh Jackman has also been talking about doing polar bear plunges in a 36-degree ocean, mowing burgers, drinking martinis, and more martinis, and more martinis, and also looking dapper in designer suits. If this is what it takes to get a Wolverine body, he should write a self-help book. The guy is on to something.
