The film was first announced in March 2022. Writer and producer Akiva Goldsman let People in on a few details about the nature of the storyline.

Obsessive Inspiration

According to Goldsman, the film will be set decades after the first movie. He alluded to the style and impact of The Last Of Us, a new drama series currently streaming on HBO.

“I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-, 30-year lapse,” Goldsman shared. “You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens? That will be especially visual in New York.”

It is assumed that Will Smith with reprise his role as Dr. Robert Neville. Michael B. Jordan’s role has yet to be announced.

A New Angle

Goldsman revealed that the sequel will closely mirror the plotline outlined in the novel by Richard Matheson, which the original film is based on. Dr. Neville (Smith) dies at the end of the first movie, but with this alternate ending, there may be more to the character’s story to show on the screen.

“What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end,” he stated. “That’s a really interesting thing we’re going to get to explore. There will be a little more fidelity to the original text.”

I Am Legend was one of the highest-grossing films in 2007 and it looks like there is much to look forward to in this new telling. Perhaps it will top the charts once again.
