Jake Gyllenhaal has an Academy Award nomination among his list of accolades, for his role in 2005’s culturally significant Brokeback Mountain.

That should assuage the sting he might still feel after director Peter Jackson called him “the worst actor” he’d ever seen during his audition for The Lord of the Rings. “I did a scene with lines and I didn’t have an accent,” he recalled. “Literally, [Peter Jackson] turned to me—he’s like, ‘You are the worst actor that I have ever seen'”. The role ultimately went to Elijah Wood, who pretty much nailed the part!
