Former supermodel Janice Dickinson has breast cancer.

The 61-year-old bravely shared her story with the Daily Mail UK and revealed the shocking diagnosis came after her doctor found a pea-sized lump in her right breast. She then had a mammogram, which confirmed that she has an early-stage ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a cancer that forms in the milk ducts.

Dickinson said that she was first diagnosed on March 12.”Just two weeks ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s hard for me to say this, but I have been diagnosed with breast cancer,” she said and wiped away the tears. “It’s still quite shocking. Today I got very scared […] I just get very scared, and it hit me. But I am not gonna let that define me, the fear. I’m going to get through this. I’ll be just fine kiddo.”

She first went to the doctor in early March for treatment for minor stomach trouble. Her doctor decided to do a full medical exam, and Janice recalled the moment she found the lump. “The doctor noticed it immediately. She said, ‘This doesn’t feel right.’ And she said, ‘We have to be real comprehensive with this and have it checked out.'”

“I’m always optimistic. Initially, when the doctor found the lump, it hurt. It became quite painful when you [touched] it. That’s the point when I knew this [was] serious, when the doctor touched this little lump in my right breast, about the size of a pea, and I went, ‘Bingo. I have cancer,'” she said.

For the first time in her life, Dickinson admitted that she felt fear. “I became fearful for my two children, my loving fiancé Rocky. We have a grandson, aged four. His name is baby Aby. I just thought, ‘They are gonna flip out.'”

Dickinson was shopping with her daughter in Beverly Hills when she received the official diagnosis, and now she has found the strength inside of her to fight this difficult battle. She will be treated at UCLA, where she will undergo radiation treatment and be on a course of medications for likely the rest of her life. Doctors believe her chances of survival are good.

She did share one message to all women out there: “We’re gonna get there. We’re gonna all get there together. I’m going to tell my truth. I’m doing this for women. I really want for this experience [to be] for women of all ages,” she said. “Have regular breast examinations, please. Girls past 30, it’s very important.”
