Jennifer Aniston Says ‘Friends’ Would be Considered Offensive Today

Warner Bros. Television

If it came out today, the 1990s smash hit sitcom Friends may never get off the ground. At least, that’s what Jennifer Aniston suggested in an interview with The Associated Press.

Aniston, of course, was one of the show’s stars. Now, it seems, everyone is offended by everything, or at least wants to be. Friends, however, had a lot of things that were just fine during its run from 1994-2004, but may not be considered so cool in today’s sensitive climate.

“There’s a whole generation of people, kids, who are now going back to episodes of Friends and find them offensive,” Aniston said, via Yahoo News.

“There were things that were never intentional and others…well, we should have thought it through, but I don’t think there was a sensitivity like there is now.”

Because of the oversensitivity, comedy isn’t as funny today, Aniston added.

“Now it’s a little tricky because you have to be very careful, which makes it really hard for comedians, because the beauty of comedy is that we make fun of ourselves, make fun of life,” she said.

Not surprisingly, Hollywood has churned out far fewer comedies in recent years. That’s a shame, according to Aniston, 54.

“Everybody needs funny. The world needs humor,” she said. “We can’t take ourselves too seriously. Especially in the United States. Everyone is far too divided.”

The show received acclaim throughout its run and is one of the most popular shows of all time. It was nominated for 62 Primetime Emmy Awards and was ranked no. 21 on TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time. All cast members made a return to the series for a reunion special which was aired on HBO Max on May 27, 2021.

  1. The reruns are still going strong. As is reruns of “White Chicks”
A lot of things probably wouldn’t be made today.
    – Blazing Saddles
    – All in the Family

add your own to the list.

  2. She’s correct, but she is like the pot calling the kettle black. Aniston is part of the woke Hollyweird mob that is a big part of the problem.

  3. We all tip-toe though life, afraid of offending someone, anyone, everyone. Get real America. Follow the Ten Commandments…do unto others…
