“California Gurls” singer and American Idol judge Katy Perry, 38, is under fire online for multiple stunts she pulled at the expense of several American Idol contestants. In this past Sunday’s episode of the popular competition show, Perry implied that several contestants, who did in fact make it to the top 24 of the competition, were being eliminated.

While Perry and the other American Idol Judges were speaking to Nutsa Buzaladze, 25, Perry told the singer, “We have really appreciated you being in this competition — and we did not put you in the top 24.” Buzaladze looked defeated but bravely replied “It’s ok,” while forcing a smile onto her face. Perry then exclaims, “YOU put yourself in that top 24. Nutsa, you put yourself in that top 24 with your incredible talent.”

After hearing this strange statement from Perry, Buzaladze appears dumbfounded. Perry added, “We didn’t put you in there, you did. As confusing as it seems you’re going to the top 24.” Buzaladze is ecstatic after hearing this, but many fans of the show thought it was cruel to put the contestant through a mind game of this sort. Perry soon performed the same trick on Zachariah Smith, 19. Perry told an initially distraught Smith, “You will be going home. To pack your bags to come back to the top 24!”
Angry American Idol fans have turned to Twitter to reveal their frustrations aimed at Perry. One Twitter user wrote, “Is it just me or does it bug anyone else that Katy Perry keeps trolling people about whether they made it to the top 24 or not. I feel it’s cruel to make them think they aren’t going through … and then say, Yeah, you made it!” Another tweeted “Turned on ‘American Idol’ for s – – ts and giggles tonight. why does Katy Perry commit psychological warfare every time she delivers the ‘you made it through’ news,” while a third wrote, “Katy Perry tries way to hard. Like get to the point girl. There is no need for the extra drama.”
This is not the first time Perry has been under fire online during her time as a judge on American Idol‘s twenty-first season. Last week, Perry was accused of mom-shaming 25-year-old contestant Sara Beth Liebe, who later quit the show. However, some viewers seem to be captivated by Perry’s controversial antics during the season, with one Twitter user tweeting, “My favorite part of American idol top #24 reveal is Katy Perry messing with people before telling them they’re in and using phrases that makes them think they’re not in.”
