Lisa Marie Presley admittedly has not been the same since July 12, 2020. That is when her son, Benjamin Keough, took his own life.

Presley, 54, is the daughter of Elvis and Priscilla, and a former wife to Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage. Benjamin was her son from her first marriage, to Danny Keough.
She opened up about Benjamin’s death and how it has impacted her in an essay for People on “National Grief Awareness Day” on Aug. 30.

“I already battle with and beat myself up tirelessly and chronically, blaming myself every single day and that’s hard enough to now live with, but others will judge and blame you too, even secretly or behind your back which is even more cruel and painful on top of everything else,” Presley wrote.
She added that “absolutely NOTHING takes away the pain,” but that a good support system can make you feel a little less alone.
“My and my three daughters’ lives as we knew it were completely detonated and destroyed by his death. We live in this every. Single. Day,” Presley wrote, adding that the purpose of the essay was to hopefully help others who have experienced similar tragedies.

“I’m saying all this, on this particular day, ‘National Grief Awareness Day,’ in the hopes that I can help raise some awareness of grief and loss,” she wrote. “Just know after this day passes, for all your friends who have had a loved one die, every day is grief awareness day. I’m saying this, in the hopes that it helps someone who is suffering as I and my children suffer. In the hopes that maybe today or as soon as possible, you can reach out to someone who is grieving someone they loved and lost. Whether they lost a child, a parent, a spouse, a sibling, a fiancé, anyone.”
