In fact, Hargitay revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show earlier this year that she broke into tears on her first date with eventual husband Peter Hermann.
Peter Hermann Makes Mariska Hargitay Cry
So, what did Peter Hermann say that made the Law & Order: SVU actor cry on their first date? He asked her to go to church with him.
“I was 35, and my friends are like, ‘Mariska you need to get out more nobody is just going to show up on your show and ask you to marry them.’… Do you know where our first date was? It’s a little too good to be true. Our first date, he asked me to go to church with him,” Hargitay told Barrymore, as Outsider.com notes.
The whole thing is a bit ironic, seeing as he did appear on Law & Order: SVU like a stroke of magic for Mariska Hargitay.
“And I was moving and I said, ‘Peter, I would love to but not today I am moving today.’ He was like, ‘Oh come on it’s an hour. It’s an hour.’ It was so funny, I just couldn’t resist so I went to church. And it was that day I remember we went to church… and I am crying and he thinks I am so moved by the sermon and I am crying because I am like, ‘I know I am going to marry him. I found my husband. I love him,’” Hargitay also intimately shared with Barrymore.

Mariska Hargitay dropped a big clue about the return of Law & Order: SVU with a recent post on Instagram. With just a single photo from behind the scenes of the TV show, she knocked fans into the stratosphere.
The only text that Hargitay posted along with the photo read: “aaannnnd we’re back!”
Mariska Hargitay appeared to confirm the return of Christopher Meloni with the Law & Order: SVU set pic she posted. The photo depicts the two actors in her office, bent over her desk and involved in what appears to be a hushed exchange.
Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Merloni are the two actors most closely associated with the show. In the Law & Order: SVU universe, the two served together as partners for 13 years.
