Actress Mena Suvari is bravely opening up about a topic that some consider to be taboo: postpartum depression. She recently revealed that she struggles “every day” with the mood disorder.
The 43-year-old made the revelation on the latest episode of Rachel Bilson’s Broad Ideas podcast, which aired Wednesday, according to Fox News.
Mean Suvari reportedly said she doesn’t want to “sugarcoat” what she’s going through.
Mothers are told “do your job — but I do want to help others,” the Fox News report said. “I don’t think it serves anybody if I sit here, and I act like I’m perfect, and I act like I’ve got it together.”
Suvari surmised that moms are trying to “survive and do the best that we can, and we have to help one another.”
Mena Gets Candid
Mena Suvari’s comments about postpartum depression come after the actress opened up earlier this year about another difficult subject.
She revealed past sexual abuses, drug addiction and other horrors she suffered in a recent memoir, The Great Peace. Suvari again went into graphic detail about those experiences in an interview with The Guardian.
“I was not being loved. I was just a body,” the actress said about her memoir. It was released in July 2021.
“I needed to purge this in order to move on,” she added. “I very much wanted to let it go.”
However, Mena Suvari said she is continuing to discuss the matters in interviews to continue gaining a degree of empowerment.
A friend of one of Mena Suvari’s older brothers raped her when she was 12 years old. After he spread rumors that she was a “whore,” an ashamed Suvari denied that the incidents occurred.
Suvari gained fame through her starring roles in American Pie and American Beauty, which also starred Kevin Spacey.
