This weekend, Nicolas Cage‘s new vampire comedy flick, Renfield, opens in theaters. In the film, Cage plays a humorous version of Dracula, a character he claims he dreamed of playing throughout his entire career. Cage recently sat down with his Renfield co-star Nicholas Hoult to discuss the film with Yahoo Entertainment, and revealed just how far he has taken his method acting in the past.

The host of the interview brought up Vampire’s Kiss, a 1986 film in which Cage ate an actual cockroach for one particular scene. While he didn’t eat any actual bugs while filming Renfield, Hoult apparently chowed down on a real-life potato bug while playing the title character of the horror comedy.

When asked about eating the cockroach in Vampire’s Kiss, Cage said, “I ate it twice, because the director did it just to prank me.” Cage then points to Hoult and reveals, “I’m not one to give advice, but he ate a potato bug so he took it to another level.” Hoult replies, “No, a cockroach is worse than a potato bug. The cockroaches I got to eat in this were caramel.” Cage then says, “But he ate a real potato bug, which is terrifying to me, but so are cockroaches. I will never do that again. I’m sorry I did it at all.”

In the interview, Cage soon decided to share some strange ideology about eating bugs. He added, “If you could get rid of your fear, your phobia of eating insects, you could solve world starvation. High protein, no fat, excellent nutrients, abundance. They’re everywhere.” Hopefully, this is not a hint from Cage about the future of our society.

Cage previously spoke about the scene where he ate a live cockroach in Vampire’s Kiss in the film’s DVD commentary. He said, “I saw it as a business decision because when people see the cockroach go in my mouth… [they] really react.”
