Can the world handle another National Treasure? Well, from the sounds of things, the answer is a definite maybe, and yes, a sequel would involve Nicolas Cage, who starred in the first.

As relayed by The Hollywood Reporter, Cage is indeed in “various stages of discussions” on a National Treasure sequel. (As an aside, he’s also discussing a sequel to Face/Off, THR reported.)

The first version of the franchise came out in 2004, with National Treasure: Book of Secrets following in 2007. Cage and producer Jerry Bruckheimer fronted both projects, and Bruckheimer is now heading the Disney+ series National Treasure: Edge of History.

But is Cage who everyone wants to see in another film.

Of course, rumors of a National Treasure 3 have been making the rounds for 15 years, but until now, there had been no other information available. Cage talking about a return as historian and treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates is at least something.

“We’re certainly working on one [National Treasure] for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen,” Bruckheimer said, via CBR. “Hopefully, they’ll both come together.”

Cage, 58, has seen a rebirth of sorts lately, starring in the likes of Pig and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

In 2020, Cage told Variety that he chose to bolt Hollywood to work on low-budget independent films because the latter offered him more freedom as an actor. But a return to the National Treasure franchise would be a return to the big time, and it sounds like it very well could happen soon.
