A Look Back

The first season of the Netflix show YOU follows Joe Goldberg, a charming yet obsessive bookstore manager who falls in love with a customer. After meeting Guinevere Beck, Joe quickly becomes obsessed with her and begins to use social media and other tactics to control her life and keep her close. Joe’s extreme behavior escalates as he goes to increasingly dangerous lengths to protect her, and to keep her from learning about his dark past.

This pattern continues as Joe moves to Los Angeles in season 2 and assumes the identity of Will Bettelheim. He meets a chef named Love. Things begin to unravel in a similar way as bodies drop and lurid secrets spill about Love and her twisted family. When Joe attempts to leave Love behind, he discovers that she is pregnant with their son.

In the third season, Joe and Love are married and raising their newborn son, Henry, in the fictional Californian suburb of Madre Linda. As Joe’s obsession with their next-door neighbor Natalie Engler intensifies, Love takes action to ensure that her dream of having the perfect family won’t be torn away. When Love kills Natalie, Joe turns his attention to Marienne, a librarian with a troubled past in the foster system. Meanwhile, Natalie’s stepson Theo has fallen for Love, further complicating the dynamics of their relationship.

The fourth season of this thriller is currently streaming on Netflix.
