The Best Dressed of the People’s Choice Awards

Shania Twain

Shania Twain won the night. Literally. The 57-year-old singer was honored with the 2022 Music Icon Award at last night’s People’s Choice Awards. And she dressed to kill.

Although the outfit is a bit too Josie and the Pussycats — very costumey — we are letting it slide because the Queen of Country Pop is nearing 60 and looks this good. The leopard print look also channeled her sex kitten youth. ’90s Shania famously used to flaunt it all in skintight catsuits.

And that was not the only throwback moment. Before accepting her big award last night, Twain performed a medley of past hits like “Any Man of Mine,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” “Waking Up Dreaming” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman.”

Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox hosted last night’s People’s Choice Awards, so of course, she showed up. The bold gown by Collina Strada presents a baroque silhouette in a cool, modern pattern. It was a perfectly dramatic statement for the evening’s host.

Lizzo

Lizzo went full White Lotus last night, and we’re here for it. The singer won the People’s Choice Award for People’s Champion and looked the part of a victor in this piece by Alexander McQueen. The embroidered, asymmetrical design channels Lizzo’s upbeat energy.

And the dress got its due in a beautiful on-stage moment. Before accepting her award, the singer was introduced by her mother, Shari Johnson-Jefferson. Lizzo then went on to share the moment with 17 on-the-ground activists who she brought onstage.

Honorable mentions: Ellen Pompeo and the cast of Grey’s Anatomy, who went for the full office Christmas party vibe, and Amy Poehler who kept it classy in a simple yet sparkling gown.

The Worst Dressed of the People’s Choice Awards

Carrie Underwood

I’m sorry, Carrie. I get that it’s almost Christmas but this heavy, beaded co-ord ages the sprightly singer. She’s not even 40! Though I applaud Underwood for stepping out of her ultra-fem comfort zone, I don’t think she’s quite ready for a serious suit era.

At least she won Favorite Female Country Artist!

Esther Povistky

Don’t get me wrong, I love Esther Povitsky. The 34-year-old comedian is hilarious and a lot of her material pokes fun at her little-girl looks. I mean, you would not guess this five-foot funny girl is in her mid-thirties. But this fit takes the Lolita thing too far. Let’s leave the white tights — and flat ballet flats — back in fourth grade.

Mariska Hargitay

Mariska Hargitay is a small screen legend, and I’m glad she got her due last night, winning the People’s Choice Award for Drama TV Star for her work on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. But this outfit is giving mixed signals. Though the bottom reads glamour, the top looks like Olivia Benson worked a late shift at the station. I get what she’s going for, after all, the People’s Choice Awards is not some stuffy affair. But this angular structure is tough to pull off.
