While transgressive filmmaker Quentin Tarantino is no stranger to shooting bizarre sequences throughout his lengthy filmography, his films rarely contain sex scenes. The beloved filmmaker recently explained the reason for that while speaking with the Spanish news outlet, Diari ARA.

Tarantino said “It’s true, sex is not part of my vision of cinema. And the truth is that, in real life, it’s a pain to shoot sex scenes, everyone is very tense. And if it was already a bit problematic to do it before, now it is even more so.”

Quentin Tarantino’s Doesn’t Like to Shoot Sex Scenes

Of Tarentino’s 9 films, only 1997’s Jackie Brown contains a sex scene. The scene in question is between Robert Di Niro and Bridgette Fonda and doesn’t feature much nudity other than a quick shot of Fonda’s backside. While Tarantino is not a fan of shooting sex scenes, he isn’t afraid to include graphic scenes of violence and gnarly depictions of drug use.

Pulp Fiction, which is one of Tarantino’s most well-received films, includes horrific sequences involving a drug overdose, male-on-male rape, and a graphic depiction of getting rid of a freshly murdered corpse. It is an interesting mindset for Tarantino to have, where shocking violence is ideal but sex scenes are where the filmmaker draws the line.

Tarantino added, “If there had ever been a sex scene that was essential to the story, I would have, but so far it hasn’t been necessary.” In Django Unchained, actress Kerry Washington is seen topless, but only during a scene of torture. Tarantino also almost always includes close-up shots of women’s feet in his films, which could cause viewers to question if this is Tarantino’s replacement for on-screen nudity.

Tarantino claims that he will stop making movies after his upcoming 10th film, which is currently titled The Movie Critic and will most likely be released in 2024. Tarantino’s most popular films include Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds, and Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood.
