The world’s ugliest dog hardly looks like a dog at all. Half-bat, half-mangy cat is more like it.

But no matter how you describe it, the Chinese crested-Chihuahua mix in question doesn’t just look ugly. It’s been honored as such.

Perhaps not-so-fittingly, the hairless pooch goes by the name “Mr. Happy Face.” Well, that’s one way to put it.

The argument can be made that he’s way more hideous than happy, and guess what? His owners ar3e likely just fine with that. After all, no less than Mr. Happy Face was crowned the victor at the 2022 World’s Ugliest Dog contest in Petaluma, California.

And his backstory is actually pretty cool. The dog’s owner, Janeda Banelly, adopted him from an Arizona shelter, where he was stationed after being rescued from the home of a hoarder, as relayed by NBC Connecticut. She said winning the ugliest dog award was truly an honor.

“I believe that this humble soul is also being an example, in subtle ways, to help humans realize that even old dogs need love and a family too,” Banelly said, via NBC Connecticut.

Banelly wrote on the contest’s official website that she was warned by the shelter that Mr. Happy Face probably had health issues. After all, no normal dog could be so ugly, it was thought.

“I saw a creature who was indeed old, needed a second chance and deserved to be loved,” Banelly wrote. “Mr. Happy Face was born into our family at the age of 17 years old.”

She hasn’t regretted a moment since they met.

“He was the happiest creature that I had ever met,” she wrote. “He hobbled up to me and chose me. I vowed that day, he would be so loved that he would never remember how awful his previous life had been.”

So yes, beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. And Mr. Happy Face can smile at that truth today. Clearly, he is about way more than just looks — despite the fact his looks are precisely what made him a winner.
